PREMIER'S AWARDS FOR QUEENSLAND SENIORS

The Premier's Awards for Queenslander Seniors recognise Queenslanders aged over 60 whose outstanding voluntary work has had a significant impact on their community.

Hundreds of older Queenslanders have been recognised for their voluntary work since the awards were established in 1986. Later this year, the 15 awards for 2008 will be presented at a ceremony in Brisbane.

Whether it is through the arts, social welfare, education or health, Queensland benefits enormously from the generous input of so many senior volunteers. I encourage people of all ages to nominate a Queenslander aged over 60, who has demonstrated excellence in volunteers.

Nominations close 20 June 2008

For further information and application form phone Office of Seniors 4334 2625 or 1300 132 654.

Arthur Bright, a master mangler of the English language, was asked how it felt to be eighty years old. "Let me put it this way," said Arthur. "You have to remember; a lot of people my age are dead at the present time."

HEALTH STRATEGY STREAM – 2020 SUMMIT

A number of strong themes arose out of the 2020 Summit, where numerous delegates participated in a 'long-term national health strategy' stream. The incorporation of a greater preventative health focus within Australia's current system was highlighted as 'by far the most common theme' in submissions to the health stream.

Presently, a meagre 2% of the nation's health budget is pledged to preventative and health promotion efforts. To increase preventative health care funding, the health stream outlined a goal for Australia to be a world leader in the translation of preventative health research into easily digestible data that not only pointed to enhanced health outcomes, but also provided evidence for sizeable commercial benefits.

Delegates highlighted the role of preventative health care in reducing the incidence of chronic disease, alleviating stress on the health system, and empowering individuals to take greater control over their own lifestyles, choices and health outcomes.

SENIORS' WEEK

PC user

SENIORS' WEEK will be celebrated from Saturday 23 to Sunday 31st August. It will be a little different this year because of council amalgamations but steps are being taken to make sure that all seniors will have access to a significant celebratory week. If you have any ideas about what you would like this years' celebrations to include please phone me on 4123 1554 and I will endeavour to include it in the calendar.

A meeting to get the planning underway will be held at the Senior Citizens' Centre at 1.00 pm on Tuesday 3rd June. Representations from all clubs and services that cater for seniors are invited to attend this meeting.

'beyond maturity blues'
depression and older people

COTA Queensland Peer Education Training Opportunity

COTAQ is currently recruiting Peer Educations for their beyond maturityblues project. This is a national project that assists older people to learn about depression, ways to identify and prevent it and what can be done to enjoy better health. Peer Educations come from different backgrounds with a broad range of skills and knowledge. They are trained to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for them to run interactive sessions with groups of older people.

Initial training is strongly based on adult learning principles. It is held over 2.5 days and has a focus of building an understanding of depression in seniors. There are ongoing opportunities for Peer Educators to meet together regularly for support, sharing of experiences and identification of further training needs.

Training will be held in various areas of Queensland and seniors with a genuine interest in health and wellbeing, enjoy talking with older people and are keen to be involved as volunteers in the program are encouraged to apply. Interest volunteers are asked to fill in an application form, and a Job Description is available which outlines what is involved.

If interested or have any questions about the program please call COTAQ on 3316 2999. Please call this number also if you would like to book a session for your senior club or group.
