PREMIER'S AWARDS FOR QUEENSLAND SENIORSThe Premier's Awards for Queenslander Seniors recognise Queenslanders aged over 60 whose outstanding voluntary work has had a significant impact on their community. Hundreds of older Queenslanders have been recognised for their voluntary work since the awards were established in 1986. Later this year, the 15 awards for 2008 will be presented at a ceremony in Brisbane. Whether it is through the arts, social welfare, education or health, Queensland benefits enormously from the generous input of so many senior volunteers. I encourage people of all ages to nominate a Queenslander aged over 60, who has demonstrated excellence in volunteers. Nominations close 20 June 2008 For further information and application form phone Office of Seniors 4334 2625 or 1300 132 654. |

She has a winning smile but a losing face. He's not worth her wiles. FILLING IN FORMS – Q. How many people in department broken down by sex ... Q. Beneficiary ... Arthur Bright, a master mangler of the English language, was asked how it felt to be eighty years old. "Let me put it this way," said Arthur. "You have to remember; a lot of people my age are dead at the present time." From a brochure of a Tokyo car rental agency ..... When a passenger of foot heave in sight, tootle the horn. Trumpet at him melodiously first, but if he still obstacles your passage then tootle him with vigour. |

HEALTH STRATEGY STREAM – 2020 SUMMITA number of strong themes arose out of the 2020 Summit, where numerous delegates participated in a 'long-term national health strategy' stream. The incorporation of a greater preventative health focus within Australia's current system was highlighted as 'by far the most common theme' in submissions to the health stream. Presently, a meagre 2% of the nation's health budget is pledged to preventative and health promotion efforts. To increase preventative health care funding, the health stream outlined a goal for Australia to be a world leader in the translation of preventative health research into easily digestible data that not only pointed to enhanced health outcomes, but also provided evidence for sizeable commercial benefits. Delegates highlighted the role of preventative health care in reducing the incidence of chronic disease, alleviating stress on the health system, and empowering individuals to take greater control over their own lifestyles, choices and health outcomes. |
