VITALCALL SERVICE

VitalCall provides the assurance, peace of mind and commitment that in a person emergency at home, you can call for help without the need to get to your phone. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.

VITALCALL provides an invaluable service to people at any stage in life. It allows people to continue living at home independently with the security that help can be summoned at the press of a button. Pendant options are also available to suit the aged, arthritic sufferers and the disabled.

You do not need to live alone to benefit from VITALCALL, after all, it's not always possible for someone to be with you at all times. The small, discrete pendant, which should be worn at all times, is water resistant and can even be worn in the shower (but not in the bath).

HELP IS AVAILABLE AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON.

For further information phone 1300 360 808 or email susan-peters@vitalcall.com.au

DEMENTIA: An Emerging Epidemic

In 2005, early 52,000 Australians were diagnosed with dementia – an average of 1,000 people every week!

Head of QIMR's Molecular Psychiatry Group, Dr. Corinne Lendon and her team are working to understand how environmental factors interact with people's genes to make them either more or less susceptible to dementia. By studying human brain cells and variants of the gene APOE, Dr. Lendon recently discovered that the hormone, oestrogen, influences the creation of the variant APOE4 which is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.

Anxiety and depression are also being targeted by Dr. Lenden's group to understand how genes influence the risk of these conditions and other behavioural and psychological symptoms among the elderly.

Dr. Lendon said mental health conditions are a major category of disease among the elderly. "Our goal is to reduce the burden of disease on sufferers and their carers, as well as the health system".

Lest We Forget

Anzac Day

On this day above all days we recall those who served in war and who did not return to receive the grateful thanks of the nation.

May they all rest proudly in the knowledge of their achievement, and may we and our successors in that heritage prove worthy of their sacrifice.

LEST WE FORGET

AUSTRALIAN ORGAN DONORS REGISTER

Sign on to save lives

Who can donate organs and tissue?
Anyone can choose to donate organs and tissue –
There is no age limit on the donation of some organs and tissue. While your age and medical history will be considered, you shouldn't assume you are too old or not healthy enough. However, only persons who are aged 18 years or more can register their consent (or objection) on the Australian Organ Donor Register (the Donor Register).

For people with serious or life-threatening illness, organ or tissue transplantation may mean a second chance at life. More than 30,000 Australians have received transplants in the last 60 years. Improved survival rates now mean that most recipients or organs or tissue can look forward to a better quality of life.

Donation can involve:

  • Organs – which include kidneys, heart, lungs, liver and pancreas
  • Tissues – which include heart valves, bone tissue, skin tissue, and eye tissue.

For an official registration form, phone 1800 777 203

FLOOD PRONE

A doctor vacationing on Tahiti met an old lawyer friend and asked him what he was doing there. The lawyer replied, "Remember that lousy real estate I bought? Well, it caught fire, so here I am with the fire insurance proceeds. What are you doing here?"

The doctor replied, "Remember that lousy real estate I had in Emerald? Well, the river overflowed, and here I am with the flood insurance proceeds".

The lawyer look puzzled. "Gee," he asked, "how do you start a flood?"

PUT ("ICE") INTO YOUR MOBILE PHONE

Mobile Phone

For some time now in Europe and the USA there has been a campaign to include in the phone memory an "ICE" number (standing for In Case of Emergency) and this is now being promoted in Australia.

All you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency under the name ("ICE"). In cases of accidents or illness Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number that you have stored as "ICE". For more than one contact name, simply use ICE1, ICE2 etc
