DEMENTIA: An Emerging EpidemicIn 2005, early 52,000 Australians were diagnosed with dementia – an average of 1,000 people every week! Head of QIMR's Molecular Psychiatry Group, Dr. Corinne Lendon and her team are working to understand how environmental factors interact with people's genes to make them either more or less susceptible to dementia. By studying human brain cells and variants of the gene APOE, Dr. Lendon recently discovered that the hormone, oestrogen, influences the creation of the variant APOE4 which is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Anxiety and depression are also being targeted by Dr. Lenden's group to understand how genes influence the risk of these conditions and other behavioural and psychological symptoms among the elderly. Dr. Lendon said mental health conditions are a major category of disease among the elderly. "Our goal is to reduce the burden of disease on sufferers and their carers, as well as the health system". |

Lest We Forget
On this day above all days we recall those who served in war and who did not return to receive the grateful thanks of the nation. May they all rest proudly in the knowledge of their achievement, and may we and our successors in that heritage prove worthy of their sacrifice. LEST WE FORGET |

PUT ("ICE") INTO YOUR MOBILE PHONE![]() For some time now in Europe and the USA there has been a campaign to include in the phone memory an "ICE" number (standing for In Case of Emergency) and this is now being promoted in Australia. All you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency under the name ("ICE"). In cases of accidents or illness Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number that you have stored as "ICE". For more than one contact name, simply use ICE1, ICE2 etc |
