RESPITE SUPPORT FOR OLDER PARENT CARERS
OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Fraser Coast Family Networks has been funded by Disability Services Queensland for one year to research the needs of older parent carers who continue to support their sons or daughters at home.

We are seeking your assistance with the above project. If you are aware of any older parent carers who meet the following criteria, could you please pass the following information onto them. If you require more information, please contact the Project Officer on 41 234 735.

Participant Criteria of the Project

  • Up to four weeks or more respite for parent carers aged 70 years and over or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parent carers aged 50 years and over; and
  • Up to two weeks or more respite for parent carers aged between 65 and 69 years inclusive, or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parent carers aged between 45 and 49 years inclusive who require hospitalisation.

The critical issues for the research are:

  • The lack of an urgent respite response when families experience an emergency
  • The significant stress to families and service providers when major emergencies occur
  • The lack of planned transitions to alternative accommodation support arrangements for people when their carers can no longer provide that care.

By the end of the project the collected data, family preferences, trialled cotenancies and agreed personal plans will provide viable, compatible cotenancy arrangements for participants choosing this option.

HOW’S THAT AGAIN?

Lovingly collected, from newspapers, magazines, talk shows:

Reverend Hammond was congratulated on being able to get his parish plastered.

The jury’s verdict showed they were of one mind: temporarily insane.

The driver of the car swerved to avoid missing the woman's husband.

The ball struck Berra on the right temple and knocked him cold. He was taken to Ford Hospital, where X-rays of his head showed nothing.

The congressman sat on the carpet and discussed the rise in prices and the high cost of living with several women.

ARE FRUIT & VEGIES DYING OUT OF YOUR DIET?

Aldi Stores are throwing themselves into the billion dollar food fray showing their goodies basket at half the cost of the other major supermarkets. Based on a basket of 33 pieces Aldi was $55.70, while Coles was $97.50, Woolworths $105.45 and IGA $108.30.

A university report has popped up claiming most Aussies are either eating wrongly or are not exercising enough. Sydney University says only 55% eat two pieces of fruit daily while only 15% tuck into the recommended five vegies. And only a quarter of the population exercises for a minimum 30 minutes five days a week.

Sydney University’s Dr. Evan Atlantis is stating the bleeding obvious when he says eating the wrong food and not exercising is a recipe for obesity "and that’s what we’re doing to ourselves".

Nutritionist Rosemary Stanton wades into the fray claiming vegies have lost their place in the daily diet.

Vegetables have disappeared at home, you don’t find them much in take-aways and restaurants charge extra for them. In all the recent studies there has been little mention of the rising prices in fruit and vegies.

Yet last month the cost of both had gone up another 9.9%, according to the Department of Statistics. The question must be posed: If Aldi and other independent fruit and vegie shops and corner stores can make a dollar keeping prices reasonable why can’t the giant supermarkets?
