Budget News

A $500 one-off bonus payment has been allocated to seniors in the Federal Government’s 2007-08 Budget. The purpose of this payment is to ensure older Australians share in the economic growth they helped create.

Individuals eligible for either the Utilities Allowance or the Seniors Concession Allowance will be entitled to the payment. Both eligible members of a couple will receive the bonus. These bonuses were paid to recipients by 30th June 2007.

This is acknowledgement for Older Australians and carers in recognition of their important contribution to our society.

Smoke Alarm

YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SMOKE ALARMS.

If your home was built before 1 July 1997, and you don’t already have smoke alarms installed, you will need to buy and install smoke alarms in accordance with Australian Standards.

If your home was built after 1997, it should have 240 volt (hard-wired) smoke alarms installed at the time it was built. This is a requirement under the Building Code of Australia (BCA). If you have done major renovations to your home since 1997, it should have included the installation of 240 volt (hard-wired) smoke alarms.

IF YOU ARE A TENANT, your landlord is only required by law to test and clean smoke alarm/s at the start of a tenancy. If the property is managed by an agent, they may arrange for this to be done. You are required by law to test and clean each smoke alarm in the dwelling at least once every 12 months.

You are required by law to replace each battery that is flat or is almost flat. If you become aware that a smoke alarm in the rental property is not working, other than because the battery is flat or almost flat, you must advise the landlord or agent as soon as practicable.

IF YOU ARE A LANDLORD, you are required to install smoke alarms in your rental property. The minimum legal requirement is an alarm in accordance with the smoke alarm Australian Standard. You must test and clean each smoke alarm within 30 days before the start of a tenancy agreement.

It is important that all information on smoke alarms and the relevant Australian Standards are understood.

Man has been defined as .... The only animal that bargains ... no dogs exchange bones.

Of all the ways of defining man, the worst is the one which calls him a rational animal.

And writing of animals ....
'That turtle is certainly nearsighted'
'A turtle near sighted? How on earth can you tell?'
'He fell in love with an army helmet'.

A tall bronzed man walked into Malarki’s bar with a magnificent parrot on his shoulder.
'Saints alive!' cried Malarkey. 'Where in the world did you get that magnificent parrot?'
'Brazil', yawned the parrot.

Mark Twain said .... I believe I have no prejudices what so ever. All I need to know is that a man is a member of the human race. That’s bad enough for me.
