ALTERNATIVE THERAPIESHave you ever found yourself questioning conventional Western medicine? Looking for something "natural"? Wonder if there’s something in Chinese medicine, which goes back thousands of years? Alternative medicine, . also termed "complementary medicine", includes a long list of therapies - herbalism, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, aromatherapy, iridology, homeopathy, and many more. The term "complementary" is preferred by many practitioners because they don’t see themselves as a substitute but as something that can be used along side conventional practices. Many are traditional, used over thousands of years, but superceded by modern medical advances and discoveries. Antibotics are a good example of this. The main problem with alternative practices is the "unknown". Some herbal medicines have side-effects, others can interfere with pharmaceuticals; and it is worth knowing that a large number of "natural" remedies for stress, insomnia and anxiety contain kava, linked to sever liver damage. Users cannot always be assured of quality, safety, ingredients, testing techniques and adherence to regulations. If you are tempted, discuss it with your health practitioner, if possible. Herbal Medicines have been used for ages, and around 80% of the world’s population rely on these. They can be used to treat a range of problems, but in Australia are mainly used for colds and allergies. They can also be used to boost immunity and stamina. Just remember they contain potent chemicals and can interfere with modern drugs. St. John’s Wort as an example is known to disrupt the actions of certain drugs, including Warfarin. If you too were a little confused you were in good company. The Senior Citizens' Club recently celebrated its 21st Birthday BUT they were operating as a club for some years before the centre was built!!!!!!!!!!! |

The Peace TheoryIf you're trying to get to sleep and the thoughts won't leave you alone, there's a magic little five letter word called Peace, and every time a thought pops into your lead, say the word "Peace". Even if you don't have too many thoughts, but simply can't get to sleep, give this a go and please persist, for your sake. |

A hypocritical country mayor told his council "One day I mean to make a pilgrimage to the top of Mount Sinai in the Holy Land and read the ten commandments aloud." The new office girl at Smith's Bakery answered the phone. "Good morning. Smith's Bakery. To which crumb do you wish to speak?" A Byron Bay fortune teller gazed into his crystal ball and told his young lady client that something amusing was about to happen to her. Then he burst into laughter. The young lady rose and slapped his face. "Why did you do that?" The old farmer was making his first ever trip to Maryborough. He thought he knew a thing or two about cities so he phoned the Salvation Army. "Is it true you save young girls?" he asked. |

Thanks for the memories -Many thanks to all the generous people who helped to make the 30th Birthday Party such an interesting morning and a great success. Wherever help was needed, it was given - from putting out chairs, blowing up balloons, baking biscuits, the technology, performing items and cleaning up afterwards - the many many hands made light work of it all. I wonder how many of us will be around to help at the 40th Birthday Party? That thought is a good reason to live life to the full everyday! Congratulations and thanks. |

FLUORIDATIONThe fluoridation of water is considered to be such a significant factor in the quest for better health for Queenslanders that the responsibility and advocacy for this has been transferred from the Oral Health Unity to the Office of the Chief Health Officer. The Chief Health Officer is a strong advocate for water fluoridation and has worked closely with the Oral Health Unit in this area. The move will strengthen the focus on oral disease as a significant health issue for Queenslanders and the role of water fluoridation in addressing the problem.
