SHADES OF GREY

Vol 12 No. 2 March 2007

  In this Issue:
  Happy Birthday

On Monday April 16th the Senior Citizens' Centre Building turns 30. To celebrate this event a morning tea party is being planned.

Members of the U3A Maryborough Inc. have volunteered to present some 'Showcase Items' to demonstrate their activities. The Senior Citizens' Club, Past members of the Excelsior Club, the Senior Citizens' Concert Party and all other users of the centre are invited to attend and participate. Following the morning tea, the Senior Citizens' bowling mats will be laid for a 'come & try' social game.

Mark the date in your diary. The building may be getting old but the users are enjoying themselves far too much to have time to feel old.

Kids' Stuff

Little Billy, age seven, came running into the house from the yard, screaming at the top of his lungs.
"Darling!" Billy's mother clasped the crying lad to her bosom. "What happened?"
"D-daddy," sobbed the lad, 'was fixing - the - the fence - and hit - the hammer - right on his finger!!!" And the boy burst into a new flood of caterwauling.
"Now, now, Billy, dear," his mother cooed. "You must learn not to cry over things like that. Why didn't you just laugh?"
"I did," wept Billy.

  Forum

I have been appointed as a member of the Wide Bay Burnett Ministerial Regional Community Forum and look forward to representing the people of this area. Items that have been discussed in the past include the Regional Marine Industry, Regional Transport Systems, Viability of Agriculture and the Social Implications of Regional Demographic Trends.

Our Region is undergoing changes at an ever increasing pace. Keeping ahead, even keeping up with change needs creative ideas and planning. Should you think of any issues that need to be included in planning for the future of this region, please phone me for a discussion. Your idea may be a key to future well being and prosperity.

Phone Barbara on 4123 1554.

Report on The Technology Symposium
Sponsore by COTAQ

The first presenter Dr. Hugh Mackay has had a distinguished academic career in Social Research. He raised some doubts about the importance of technology in our society and suggested that whenever we are confronted by the "need" to invest in a new piece of technology we should ask ourselves "To what problem is this a solution?" Obviously if there is no problem a solution is not required.

He also suggested we consider the difference between Data and Communication. Technology is an efficient tool for the first but a failure for the second. Also there is some data we need but a data overload is helpful to no-one.

Dr. Karen Barnett discussed some findings about "Chatrooms". The highest percentage of the community that uses this facility is older men. The next is the 18 to 24 age group. The most used sites on the web are pornography. Her closing thought "You cannot hug a computer!"

Professor Jeffrey Soar was the final speaker. He gave a presentation about technology of the future and how it can be tailored to suit older people living alone. Monitoring of medication, whereabouts and levels of activity can all be achieved without personal intrusion, ensuring the well being of the client. This was a bit confronting but very interesting. Who knows what the future holds?

  Values

Values are very much in the news lately - Different Values, Shared Values, lack of values are all topics under discussion. A list of shared values, included in the consultation report titled "Creating a Future for Our Sector" was released in February 2007. Do you agree with its findings? You may have some values of your own that you think should be been included.

  • Commitment to Social Justice: a commitment to ensuring everyone has equal opportunity to achieve their potential. This encompasses the ideas of access and equity, participation and dignity.
  • Commitment to creating a fair and equal society.
  • Commitment to upholding Human Rights: the rights that are considered to belong automatically to all people - freedom, justice and equality.
  • Transformation: commitment to improving people's lives and improving conditions in society.
  • Empowerment / self-determination: a commitment to increasing individuals' & communities' control over their lives, building capacity and increasing self-reliance.
  • Appreciation of Diversity; celebration of diversity of opinion and appreciation of difference.
