Bilharzia

Medical Research in Queensland is tackling the mammoth task of helping developing countries address one of their most serious health issues known as blood flukes or Bilharzia. Bilharzia are parasitic worms that infect 200 million people world wide and are responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths annually. QMIR Dr. Alex Loukas has developed a vaccine resulting in the reductions of worm counts. Blood flukes typically live in the host's liver or in the veins that surround either the bladder or the small and large intestines, where a single female worm will release up to 300 eggs into the blood stream per day for the rest of its life (the lifespan of blood flukes cane be as long as five years).

The eggs are passed out through the faeces and urine where the life cycle continues in the bodies of freshwater snails. However, up to 50 percent of these can become trapped in the body, leading to the symptoms of Bilharzia; fever, headache, lethargy, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, enlarged liver and many more.

Bilharzia ranks second behind malaria in terms of the public health importance of parasites and leads to damage to the intestines, bladder and other organs, which in turn can result in bladder cancer, renal failure, liver fibrosis and death.

LOGIC

"Have you anything to say before I pass sentence on you?" asked the judge.
"Yes, Your Honour." The prisoner took a deep breath. "How can I be convicted of forgery when -- when I can't even write my own name!"
The judge stroked his chin. "Because you were not charged with signing your own name."

A commuter came running along the platform at Knobby Vale, crying, "Stop! I say - train, stop!" But the train pulled away.
"Confound it, missed the bloody thing by no more than two seconds!"
Another, man waiting for an incoming train, lowered his newspaper in annoyance. "The way you"re carrying on, old boy, one might have thought you missed it by two hours!"

At twenty, a girl will ask: "Is he good-looking?"
At thirty, she asks, "Is he rich?"
At thirty-five, she cries, "Where is he?"

SMILE

An apple a day may not keep the Doctor or Dentist away, but it will help you to maintain good oral health.

Dental decay and gum disease are the most common health conditions in Australia. There are simple steps everyone can do to improve their dental health - Limit consumption of sugary snacks; eat five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit every day; good oral hygiene.

It is important to brush your teeth with a toothpaste containing fluoride and floss your teeth daily.
