Is There Any GOOD News??

Yes there is ... One of the main ingredients in BEER appears to thwart prostate cancer, according to US Research. The downside to some is that you would have to quaff 17 pints to gain a healthy dose of the antioxidant found in hops. But it may be worth it to some.

Sleeping pills are still prescribed for older folk, despite the adverse publicity of side effects. If you are considering taking sleeping pills, according to some recent research, think about:

  • Average sleep time went up only 25 minutes
  • You need less sleep as you age anyway
  • Only 1 in 13 found real benefits
  • Awakenings only reduced 1 in 2 nights
  • And the side effects can be troubling.

Ode to Cranky Old Men

I chanced to pass a window
While walking through the mall;
With nothing much upon my mind,
Quite blank as I recall.

I noticed in that window
A cranky-faced old man;
And why he looked so cranky
I didn't understand.

Just why he looked at me that way
Was more than I could see;
Until I came to realise
The cranky man was ME!

The English Language

"Calderwood? Are you, by chance, related to the Wiltshire Calderwoods?" asked Lord Parkenhurst.
"I’m afraid not," said the Australian.
"Ah, then the Calderwoods of Burford Manor?"
"Nope. Sorry, sir... You Englishmen are so conscious of your ancestry ..."
"But of course," sniffed the Lord. "I, for example, can trace my forebears all the way back to Queen Anne."
"Well," sighed the Australian, "I have Irish, Italian, French and Portuguese blood."
"By Jove!" exclaimed Lord Parkenhurst. "How sporting of your mother."

Grandparent Carers: A Step Closer to Government Support

Resolution agreed to by the Community and Disability Services Ministers’ Conference on 26 July 2006 reads:

"Ministers agreed that jurisdictions work together to develop a mechanism to allow grandparents caring predominantly for their grandchildren without formal authority, to be eligible for appropriate Australian Government and State and Territory Government payments and services. This excludes foster care payments."

Age By Chocolate

This is pretty neat. It takes less than a minute.

Work this out as you read...Be sure you don’t read the bottom until you’ve worked it out!

  1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)
  2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)
  3. Add 5
  4. Multiply it by 50 - I’ll wait while you get the calculator
  5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1756. If you haven’t, add 1855.
  6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number
The first digit of this was the number of times you really want to eat Chocolate. The next two numbers are ... YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2006) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS.

Our Daily Bread

What do we ask when we pray
"Give us this day our Daily Bread"
What is our daily bread?
It is peace and love.
Besides the bread for our bodies, we need that other bread for our souls to be able to live.
For man does not live on bread alone,
And each of us, before we pass the prayer onto somebody else,
Let us put that prayer into life.
Let us spread the Good News that prayer is our strength.

Mother Teresa
