My Occupation

The Clerk obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar" asked - "What is your occupation?"
"I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."
The clerk paused, pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire!
"Might I ask just what you do in your field?"
Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing programme of research, (what mother doesn’t), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I’m working for my Masters, (the whole bloody family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?). I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

When I got home, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants - ages 10, 7 and 3. Upstairs, I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), the child-development programme, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had triumphed over bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mum".

Motherhood ...What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations", and great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates"??? I think so!!! I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistant".

National Survey

A national survey of the barriers confronted by tourists with disabilities when making travel arrangements, finding accommodation and visiting tourist venues has highlighted the difficulties which tourists with disabilities confront when making arrangements to take a holiday, compared to tourists who do not have the need for accessible facilities.

The survey confirms that the number of accessible hotels/motels and other tourist facilities in Australia is low, making holidays for tourists with disabilities difficult and time-consuming to arrange.

  • 42.7% of participants with a physical disability had difficulty in finding suitable accessible accommodation
  • 36% of participants with a physical disability found that hotels/motels displayed the international symbol for access, but the accommodation was not wheelchair accessible;
  • 80% of participants with a vision impairment highlighted a lack of audio display in hotels/motels and tourist venues such as museums.
  • 18.7% of participants who took their mobility aids on a flight with them, found it was damaged on arrival at their destination. A number of those same tourists reported that their mobility aids had been damaged more than once.

Don’t waste the sunshine.
Walk in it
Garden in it
Hang out the washing in it
And keep a little bit of it in your heart to use
in cases of emergencies.

Show of Hand

Hands are one of the most common means by which food gets contaminated and food poisoning bacteria get spread. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching or eating food, after touching raw meat, fish or poultry, after using the toilet, after handling chemicals, after blowing your nose, and after playing with a pet.

Did you know? A survey of Meat and Livestock Australia states that most people wash their hands for ten seconds or less, and that half of all consumers do not wash their hands properly before handling food. Scary!

"Best before" date means the food will retain all of its quality up to the stated date. After that, there’s no guarantee.

"Use-by" date means that the food should be consumed before that date, because of safety reason. After that date, the product should not be consumed or sold.

Did you know? The cost of food-borne illness in Australia has been estimated between $487 and $1,900 million per year.

The Oracle

Disability Services, through the Department of Communities, proudly provided funding for the replacement of the recording equipment for our programme for print disabled clients, The Oracle. This should ensure that the clients receive the best possible quality news tapes. If you know of anyone else who would benefit from receiving the Oracle tapes please ring Barbara on 4123 1554 and a service will be arranged.
