SHADES OF GREY

Vol 11 No. 4 May 2006

  In this Issue:

Housing, Equity and Reverse Mortgages

While a reverse mortgage enables home-owners to borrow a lump sum or in some cases receive regular payments against the value of their home, few respondents to a survey indicated that they would take out a reverse mortgage on their home to finance future needs. This is despite widespread expectations by the banks that the market is set to expand significantly and will peak in 2015 when the bulk of Baby-Boomers will be retired with inadequate resources to source their expectations.

The respondents expressed concern about what most saw as punitive fees and charges and accumulation of compound interest which might force the sale of the house and create untenable debt for the next generation and included the notion of betrayal, with the government and the banks, instead of the family, being the object of people’s hostilities.

To many people, banks are seen to feed off weaknesses in family relations and hence are to be regarded with suspicion.

grandmother

I like...
Chocolate cake, plum pudding & sweets
I hate...
What they do to my hips.

The husband had just finished reading the book, "MAN OF THE HOUSE". He storms into the kitchen and walks directly up to his wife. Pointing a finger in her face, he says, "From now on, I want you to know that I am the man of this house, and my word is law! I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I’m finished eating my meal, I expect a scrumptious dessert afterward. Then, after dinner, you are going to draw my bath so that I can relax ... And when I’m finished with my bath, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?"
His wife replies, "The funeral director, would be my guess."

Grandmas can shed the yoke of responsibility, relax and enjoy their grandchildren in a way that was not possible when they were raising their own children. And they can glow in the realisation that here is their seed of life that will harvest generations to come.

Sleep Problems

Do you suffer from insomnia? Over one third of people suffer from insomnia from time to time. Only around five percent need treatment for the condition. Reducing anxiety and sticking to a routine can improve sleeping habits. Suggestions include

  • Avoid tea, coffee or other stimulants before bed
  • Have a warm milky drink since milk contains a sleep inducing amino acid
  • Do not exercise strenuously before bedtime however relaxation exercises may help
  • Do not read anything likely to keep you awake before retiring
  • Do not watch television in bed
  • Turn your alarm clock to the wall, watching the clock may keep you awake
  • If you cannot fall asleep in a reasonable time get out of bed and do something such as read for a short period of time.

Remember not everyone needs 8 hours sleep per night, different individuals have different needs, some need 8 hours, some need 10, some function well on 6, different age groups also have different needs ... it’s a matter of find what works for you.

If you can’t sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. It’s the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep.

On English

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese
Yet the plural of mouse should never be meese,
If I speak of a foot and you show me your feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and the whole set are teeth,
Why should not the plural of booth be called beeth?

grandpa

Our children are here to stay, but our babies and toddlers and preschoolers are gone as fast as they can grow up -
And we have only a short moment with each.
When you see a grandfather take a baby in his arms, you see that the moment hasn’t always been long enough.

Ha! Ha!

One day a man spotted a lamp by the roadside. He picked it up, rubbed it vigorously and a genie appeared.
"I’ll grant you your fondest wish," the genie said.
The man thought for a moment then said, "I want a spectacular job, a job that no man has ever succeeded at or has ever attempted to do."
"Poof!" said the genie. "You’re a housewife!"

God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers.
