Seniors' Week

Seniors' Week comes of age this year and a grand twenty-first birthday celebration is anticipated. The first meeting for Seniors Week 2006 will be called for Monday 13th March. Anyone who is interested in being part of this planning process is welcome to come and bring their ideas to the group. The meeting will be held in the Senior Citizens' Centre, 333 Alice Street, Maryborough at 11.00am. A "Country Day in Howard" is being planned by the Maryborough and Hervey Bay Councils collaboratively and a submission for funding has been prepared. This is just one of the new events for Seniors' Week presently under discussion.

Help me to be
Cheerful when things go wrong;
Persevering when things are Difficult;
and serene when things are irritating.

Enable me to be
Helpful to those in difficulties;
Kind to those in need;
Sympathetic to those whose hearts
are sore and sad.

Health Matters

Stress Lowers Immune System

Research has confirmed what has been suspected for years - stress makes you sick! Scientists have discovered that high levels of a particular hormone occur at times of stress. This hormone is a little-known cousin of adrenaline, and inhibits the ability of the body to fight off bacteria and viruses.

Techniques for Reducing Stress

Self-Direction. People need to take responsibility for their lives. Enjoy relationships, put as much as you can into them, but do not let them run your life.

Flexibility. Keep the thinking open, particularly as you get older. "Wear life like a loose robe!"

Don't necessarily aim for perfection. Schedule things and then finish one task at a time. Don't over-plan and always schedule some enjoyment in those plans.

Don't become obsessed with self-organisation.

Develop some social responsibility.

Learn some relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, exercise - at least 45 minutes 3 times per week.

Stay on Your Feet

Wear Safe Footwear

To stay on your feet you need footwear that STAYS ON YOUR FEET.

What is "unsafe" footwear?

  • Loose and ill-fitting
  • Slippery or worn soles and heels
  • Soft or stretched uppers
  • High or narrow heels
  • Slip-on shoes, sandals or thongs
  • Socks without shoes

Look After Your Feet

Our feet have to do a huge job for us. In an average lifetime they carry us a distance more than four times the earth's circumference.

Our feet are very complex structures containing nearly a quarter of the bones in our body (26 bones to be exact), so they should be looked afer. But too often we just take our feet for granted.

Foot pain or other problems can affect your balance and the way you walk so see your GP or Podiatrist soon.

If you have diabetes regular checking is even more vital.

...and remember your regular physical activity

MIRACLES

Paddy Kerrigan was going through Irish customs after his trip to France. Among his suitcases stood a brown gallon container. "And what might this be?" asked the customs officer.
"Sure, and that is holy water I am bringin' back t'me loved ones, from Lourdes."
The customs officer unscrewed the top, sniffed, blinked, raised the bottle, and tasted the contents. "Water, did you say now?" he sputtered. "This is brandy. Strong French brandy!"
"Praise the Lord!" cried Kerrigan. "Another miracle!"

RECOGNISING A STROKE

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours which is tough.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

  1. Ask the individual to SMILE.
  2. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
  3. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (coherently) ( e.g. It is sunny out today).
If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 0-0-0 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
