Alzheimer's - Looking at Prevention

As well as factors that put you at risk of suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's, there are a whole set of things that may actually prevent the onset and could give important clues about protection and possible treatment.

In research done in China, it was found that people with absolutely no education appear to become demented at an earlier age. Research is continuing to attempt to find a correlation between years at school and onset.

There has been a study of novice nuns, which suggested that brain function at age 18 might have predicated their subsequent brain function at 75! A tool called idea density was used, and it appears, that, under similar education, environment and food, those with a high idea density at 18 years through to 80 did not become demented at all. However, the group with a low idea density, living under exactly the same conditions, became demented.

The conclusion is that there is something that's built into the brain early in life that makes you resistant.

There is a protein called amyloid protein that is not understood, but appears to gum up the brain in Alzheimer victims. The problem is to find what makes the brain resistant to a deposition of that protein.

Prevention may include all or some of education, diet, brain stimulation over a long period of time, drugs and lifestyle, particularly, for example, in methods of food preparation.

Alzheimer's Smoking Gun

Scientists could be close to developing a new treatment for Alzheimer's after identifying a toxin which speeds the onset of the degenerative brain disease. The toxin, called quinolinic acid, kills nerve cells in the brain, leading to dysfunction and death.

"Quinolinic acid may not be the cause of Alzheimer's disease, but it plays a key role in its progression," said researcher Dr. Karen Cullen from the University of Sydney. "It's the smoking gun, if you like."

"While we won't be able to prevent people from getting Alzheimer's, we may eventually, with the use of drugs, be able to slow down the progression."

Alzheimer's affects millions around the world and is a growing problem. Symptoms start with memory loss, which progresses to complete helplessness as brain cells are destroyed.

The Alzheimer's research team from Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital, the University of Sydney and Japan's Hokkaido University found quinolinic acid neurotoxicity in the brains of dementia patients. The acid is part of a biochemical pathway also found in other brain disorders. The team said there were several drugs being developed for other conditions which targeted this pathway and could be used to 'significant effect' in future to treat Alzheimer's.

Smile A While

One evening, an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between 2 'wolves' inside us all.

"One is Evil. It is anger, fear, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

"The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
