An Invitation to Participate

RHONDA NOYES MARYBOROUGH CITY COUNCIL

Maryborough City Council is currently working with a local project team to organise a healthy lifestyles initiative called "Maryborough Moves". The project will see local people, organisations and teams involved in a three month good health and exercise program.

There are three main aims for the project:

  • To engage people in safe, low cost physical activity which will assist their health and well-being
  • To increase Community participation inlocal sport and recreational groups and the use of existing walking tracks and public space areas
  • To foster healthy interactions, relationships and community spirit within the City

The plan is to see how many times the Maryborough community, over an 11 week period, can walk and/or exercise itself around Australia. Each week the total kilometres that the community has walked / exercised will be tallied and made public.

The project will close with a Grand Finale Day on 22 May 2005. This event will include a good health expo, which will include such activities as, Yoga, life ball, Nordic pole walking, tennis skateboarding and golf.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Life Lab

Eat lots of fibre (fresh fruit and vegetables, unprocessed bran) low fat dairy product and trim cuts of meat to reduce risk of bowel cancer. QIMR research has proven that a combination low-fat high-fibre diet can prevent bowel cancer in susceptible people.

To reduce risk of ovarian cancer don't smoke, avoid talcum powder (especially if you haven't had a tubal ligation or hysterectomy), drink a glass of red wine a day and do what you can to reduce lifetime ovulations- eg breastfeed your babies.

Infectious Agents

Infectious agents like viruses and bacteria kill millions of people each year - in fact one third of all deaths in the world are due to infectious diseases while 10% are caused by cancer! If a vaccine is available, take advantage. You will not only avoid personal suffering and illness, but also reduce the toll on the health care system by staying healthy. Think about it, if there was a vaccine to prevent cancer, would you take it?

SKIN CANCER PARTNERSHIP TO COMBAT QUEENSLAND'S EPIDEMIC

Life Lab

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and Suncorp have announced a first-ever partnership to combat the scourge of skin cancer.

Previous QIMR research has shown that people with high mole counts have greater increased risks of melanoma in later life. This new study is one of the first of its kind to examine mole counts in very young children

Skin colour, skin type and facial freckling were all associated with mole counts in these young children, as well as ethnicity. Children with dark skin and those who develop deep tans had significantly lower mole counts than children with fair skin.
